VCAS Launches New Pilot to Strengthen Data Skills and Evidence Across Sunderland’s VCSE Sector
VCAS is pleased to announce a new partnership with the University of Sunderland through the North East Community Research Partnership.
This pilot will explore how VCSE organisations across the city collect, interpret and use data — and how we can make this easier, more meaningful and more supportive of your work.

Why this matters
Organisations tell us they are under pressure to evidence need, impact and value — but data systems are often inconsistent, time‑consuming or not designed for the realities of frontline delivery.
This project aims to change that by building a bottom‑up, sector‑led approach to data.
What the project will involve

1
Working alongiside a Community Researcher
A researcher will work alongside VCAS to map current data practices across the sector.
2
Map data skills, confidence and needs
We’ll gather insights from 30–40 organisations through short surveys and interviews.
3
Host a practical workshop (20–25 organisations)
This will include:
• Sharing how groups currently use data
• Identifying what’s working and what isn’t
• Capacity‑building sessions on data literacy, impact measurement and data protection
• Exploring what a more supportive data system could look like
4
Co‑design a simple shared tool
We’ll develop a prototype (e.g., Excel or Google Form) to help organisations record activity and impact more easily.
5
Test and refine the tool
A follow‑up peer session will gather feedback and shape improvements.
6
Produce a short report with infographics
This will summarise what we’ve learned and outline practical next steps for the sector.

What we hope to achieve
A clearer picture of how the sector uses data, what support is needed, and how we can build a practical, accessible and sector‑owned data infrastructure for Sunderland.
