National Lottery Funding to Tackle Health Inequities Across Tyne & Wear
The Sunderland Bangladeshi International Centre (SBIC) has secured major investment from The National Lottery Community Fund to lead a five‑year programme ' Breaking Barriers' tackling health inequities caused by structural racism and discrimination. The Black‑ and Muslim‑led partnership supported 19,750 racially minoritised residents last year and brings together organisations including ICOS, CREST, NERS, WBICC, GACA, Culture Care North, SBMEN and New Horizon. The University of Sunderland are a partner organisation and VCAS are delighted to be supporting this programme with their expertise.
The programme will place Black and Muslim communities at the centre of diagnosis, co‑design and delivery, addressing cultural, linguistic and trust barriers that shape health outcomes. Over the next five years, partners will train Community Health Activator‑Researchers (CHARs), build the capacity of Black‑ and Muslim‑led organisations, strengthen prevention and digital inclusion, and influence regional commissioning and system behaviour.
Operating across Sunderland, South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Gateshead and Newcastle, the programme will contribute to national learning through the Health Inequities Partnership and support wider NHS system reform.
